Armed with a passion for good food and warm hospitality, this is owner Tino Chew’s first venture into the restaurant business. Tocha (say Tor-shay), which is Portuguese for torch, located at Hotel Boss, at Jalan Sultan Road, is the result of his hard work.
The establishment, which offers indoor and alfresco dining, features a predominantly European or Western spread that is slightly infused with Asian influences.
Start with the Mushroom Soup, which has a robust flavour and chunks of mushroom (where there are three types, including Portobello) that adds texture. Tocha’s spicy mid wings are well-marinated, and perfectly complemented by the home-made sambal belachan sauce.
The Baked Scallops are decadently cooked with three types of melted cheeses (mozzarella, cheddar, and parmesan), which doesn’t interfere with the flavours of the juicy and superbly fresh scallop.
For mains, don’t miss the Braised Lamb Shanks. There is little to no gamey aftertaste that might be familiar to lamb and mutton eaters. The dish is seasoned overnight, and has a fall-off-the-bone quality that you can even eat it with just a fork!
Prefer something else? The Tenderloin Steak won’t disappoint. Here, you can taste the freshness and the meat’s springy texture, as all meats at Tocha are chilled, not frozen. The steak is perfectly cooked, and, if you like, is best had with a glass of red (we tried Peng Wine’s Gala, which is exclusive to Tocha).
The Iberico Pork with corn, baby potatoes and spinach, is generously coated with herbs that elevates the dish.
Overall, Tocha Bistro, which offers quality food and drinks at affordable rates, is the perfect place to head to, if you’re seeking a fine dining experience without putting a hole in your pocket.
