Introducing… a whole new city experience after dark.
Whoever said night-time is for sleeping, clearly has not experienced the sheer exhilaration that comes with exploring the city after dark. And because life isn’t all about alcohol and hard-core partying, we thought we’d come up with a list for non-partygoers (only because Zouk and the bars and clubs around Clarke Quay are already well-known amongst locals and tourists alike). You’re welcome.
1. Walk around Gardens by the Bay
The crowds may have dispersed, Cloud Forest and Flower Dome are closed. But it doesn’t mean there’s nothing to offer at the Gardens once the sun sets. Lighted trees, gorgeous flora and fauna, plus Satay by the Bay and a gorgeous view of the Marina Bay area, there’s plenty to explore. What’s more: it’s cooler to walk around (especially if you tend to sweat easily), and the premises are free. It’s also quite the experience to be strolling around the gardens (how very English) while listening to the sounds of traffic in the highway that’s just beyond the bushes. The Supertree Grove opens till 2am, so if you’re looking to admire the Pandora-like vertical gardens, it’s best to reach before then.
2. Visit the Night Safari
If you don’t abide by a 9pm bedtime schedule, the world’s first night zoo, which opens from 7.30pm to 12pm, offers activities that’ll satisfy every single member of the family (or the group). Think tram rides that let you go up close and personal with the Safari’s denizens, exciting performances and educational trails that’ll leave you with wonderful memories of the place long after you leave.
3. G-Max Reverse Bungy
Highly suitable for thrill-seekers, the G-Max reverse bungee jump located next to Clarke Quay, is a must-try. As its name suggests, instead of jumping from a cliff or tall structure, this one launches you skywards into the night (at a height of 60 metres high and reaches speeds over 120kph).
4. Night cycling
Explore the island on two wheels, especially in the middle of the night, when traffic is low, and the temperatures have dipped. Plus, there are a number of scenic routes to explore, including East Coast Park which links to the Marina Bay Area and the city, Changi Coastal area, which links to Pasir Ris, Tampines or Punggol, Seletar Loops, and so on. You can even explore the city centre and check out Singapore’s iconic structures after dark, should you wish. Just make sure you wear the necessary protective gear, and practice safety procedures before heading out.
5. Prawning
Fancy the feeling of fishing for your next meal? Try prawning, said to be the lighter, slightly easier alternative to fishing. The activity, which was first introduced in Singapore around 2010, has gained a following for its laidback, kampong-like atmosphere, where groups of friends and families gather around a pond looking for fresh prawns to barbecue or take home. With 24-hour establishments, like Hai Bin Prawning and Fish @ Bugis+, you no longer have to be limited by opening hours to partake in your favourite past time now.
6. Kite flying at night
When it comes to romance (on a budget, at least), there’s nothing more romantic than kite flying, especially under the stars. But instead of regular kites, you’ll be flying LED-powered ones that are just as fun and colourful, if not more. Pack a picnic if you’re headed to the Marina Barrage, or somewhere equally idyllic.
7. Escape rooms
Itching for a bit of excitement? Give yourself (and your brain) a healthy work out with escape rooms – themed rooms that present a series of challenges which you have to solve, so you can get out of them in time. Most of them open till midnight, or 1am, especially during weekends.
8. Late night eats
Long regarded as the culinary capital in Asia, and eating being a national past-time in Singapore, it’s no surprise that there should be more than a few supper joints located near you after dark. And there are plenty island-wide too, with a variety of options when it comes to cuisine and budget.
