9 Things You Have to Do When You’re in New Zealand

7 January 2020

Whether you’re splitting your trip into two (North or South Island), or you’re embarking on a long and ambitious itinerary covering as much as you can, these are the things you shouldn’t miss.

1. Visit the glowworm caves

Just one of the many breathtaking sights you’ll get to see in New Zealand, the world-renowned caves that are located a few hours from Auckland, resemble a glittering sky full of stars. Thanks to the population of glowworms (Arachnocampa luminosa) that are unique to the land, you’ll see clusters of luminescent creatures as your guide takes you through the caves’ sights. The caves gained more popularity and traction after Chinese celebrity couple Nicky Wu and Cecilia Liu Shi Shi took their wedding photos there in March 2016.

2. Milford Sound

Arguably New Zealand’s most famous natural attraction and described by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world”, you’ll be greeted by a dramatic sight of towering peaks, inky black waters, and cliffs that look as if they could be part of a set from the movie Avatar. There are several things to do there, including cruises, flights, and kayaking expeditions.

3. Catch the Southern Lights if you can

While the Southern Lights (or Aurora Australis) are said to be harder to catch than its northern sister, if you do get the chance to do so, head to places like Lake Tekapo, Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, Stewart Island, The Catlins and Dunedin, as the solar phenomenon lights up the skies in a stunning series of greens, purples, yellows, and more.

4. Go zorbing

Roll with it literally in a large, inflated transparent ball that’ll have you hurtling downhill up to speeds of about 50km per hour. Choose from its wet or dry rides, four track options, and eight ride variations.

5. Take in the gorgeous alpine sights

During your tour, you will probably drive by several mountainous regions. But if you’re a fan of the incredible peaks, here are five to check out while you’re in New Zealand. Aoraki Mount Cook, Mount Taranaki, Tongariro National Park, Mount Aspiring, and Mitre Peak.

6. Visit a Maori settlement

After seeing the country’s beautiful sights, get to know a bit more about its indigenous culture, too. Tamaki Maori Village, New Zealand’s award-winning cultural attraction offers you a comprehensive experience, which includes a traditional welcome ceremony, interactive tour in a pre-European village, performances, and more.

7. Visit Hobbiton

Fans of the Lord of the Rings movie series should not miss a trip to the idyllic Shire in Middle Earth. Just as you saw on the big screens, you’ll be greeted by rolling lush pastures, impeccably kept hobbit holes and gardens, and even a bar, where the hobbits used to hang out at.

8. Head to Lake Wakatipu

The inland lake on the South Island, and the third largest lake in New Zealand, Lake Wakatipu offers postcard-perfect sights that will also elevate the ‘gram (if you’re into that sort of thing).

9. Bungee jumping and sky diving

What’s a trip to New Zealand without experiencing some heart-stopping adventures? If you’re so inclined, take a leap of faith with bungee jumping in the land where it all began. Not keen on betting your life on just a string? Look to sky diving instead, where you’ll get to admire New Zealand’s magnificent scenery from up high. With a certified instructor flying tandem, of course.
