Nintendo Switch 2 Review and the Hottest Nintendo Switch Games 2025| merewards

23 July 2025 by Grace Kho

When the Nintendo Switch was released, it took the world by storm. The gaming industry had never seen anything like it before. Until then, consoles were either handheld or bulky systems connected to a TV. As the name suggests, the “Switch” lets you switch between both modes, effectively making it a 2-in-1 device. The concept was brilliant, and everyone loved it.

This year, Nintendo released the Switch 2 — an improved version of the original — and many are excited about the upgrades. So, what exactly has changed, and what are the pros and cons of this new version?

Pros and Cons of Nintendo Switch 2

Pros

New Joy-Con

One of the main improvements in the upgrade lies in the Joy-Con controllers. Featuring an all-new magnetic snap-on connection, it's now easier than ever to attach and detach the Joy-Cons from the Switch. This eliminates previous issues, such as difficulty removing them or the controllers getting stuck due to the older locking mechanism.

Additionally, the Switch 2 introduces a new "mouse mode" for the Joy-Con 2, allowing it to function like a computer mouse on almost any flat surface, even on a pair of jeans! While there aren't many games currently available that take advantage of this feature yet, we can expect future games designed specifically for the Switch 2..

The new Joy-Con is also ergonomically improved, offering more comfortable gameplay whether mounted on the grip, attached to the console, or used separately for multiplayer sessions.

Higher FPS

Previously capped at 30 frames per second (FPS) on the original Switch, the Switch 2’s upgraded system now generally targets a locked 60 FPS, with some games reaching up to 120 FPS when connected to a compatible display. This significant boost makes gameplay smoother, faster, and more responsive, delivering a much better overall gaming experience.

The Switch 2 also features improved visuals, including better lighting, textures, and detail. When connected to a TV, it can output in 4K resolution, bringing games to life like never before.

In short, the higher FPS and visual upgrades mean that even if you don’t purchase new games specifically for the Switch 2, you can still replay your existing games with noticeable improvements in performance and visual quality.

Bigger Screen

Of course, the new Nintendo Switch 2 comes with a wider screen; but the thickness of the console remains unchanged. Featuring a 7.9-inch high-definition LCD display with HDR support and refresh rates of up to 120 FPS, it offers sharper detail and greater visual clarity. The new Switch is definitely delivering a better overall gaming experience — even for older games.

Cons

Price Difference

Switch (2017): $469
OLED (2021): $549
Switch 2 (20: $719

With every new console comes its pros and cons. One main drawback of the Switch 2 is its high price point, retailing at $719. Despite the steep cost, many argue that it's reasonable when adjusted for inflation compared to eight years ago, when the original Nintendo Switch was launched.

Ultimately, whether the upgrade is worth it depends on the games you play. Some games, like The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, or Mario Kart World would benefit greatly from higher FPS, delivering a smoother and more immersive experience. However, if you're mostly playing more relaxed, single-player games like Animal Crossing or Super Mario Odyssey, you may find the upgrade unnecessary.

Battery Life

Since the new Nintendo Switch 2 runs at a higher frame rate of 60 FPS — and up to 120 FPS for some games — it’s no surprise that the battery drains faster than the original Switch. However, battery life varies depending on the game being played. Games that demand better graphics or faster performance push for higher frame rates, which consume more power and lead to quicker battery drain. On average, the Switch 2 lasts around 3 to 4 hours, which is something to keep in mind if you're planning to use it during a long flight.

While this is largely out of your control, it’s a trade-off — a price you pay for enhanced graphics and a smoother overall gaming experience.

So even if you’ve already experienced it on the original Switch, now is the perfect time to dive back in and embark on an unforgettable solo adventure once again.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

While Xenoblade Chronicles may share a similar art style with the popular PC game Genshin Impact, the gameplay is quite different. Xenoblade Chronicles is primarily an action role-playing game (RPG) that features a real-time, action-based battle system. Unlike The Legend of Zelda and Genshin Impact, which follow a more open-world format, Xenoblade Chronicles is more linear in progression, heavily story-driven, and focused on structured missions.

Among the series, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 remains one of the most popular, with many players feeling a strong emotional connection to its storyline. With the upgraded Switch 2, you can expect an even better user experience if you decide to revisit or try this game.
