MASA by Black Society review: Dim Sum made modern that tastes as good as it looks

5 June 2020

At first glance, it doesn’t look like your regular dim sum restaurants, but instead a Spanish restaurant serving tapas. But don’t be fooled – at MASA by Black Society, it is the ideal restaurant to get your dim sum fix.

‘MASA’ is a Cantonese and Taiwanese lingo for ‘master’, and they are truly a master at their culinary craft. If you’re looking for a place for special get-togethers such as birthday celebrations, or for lunch, tea, and dinner, MASA by Black Society’s branches at Orchard Gateway and Great World City are your go to spots.

Order their famed Dim Sum Tasting Platter, which comes with six different bite-sized treats intricately arranged to showcase the restaurant’s wide range and culinary skills. Start with the savouries – the har gao squid ink is delightfully unique, while the goose filled with duck meat (of course) tastes as good as it looks. Next, move on to the sweets - the little green apple is an in-house creation, while the classic custard bun oozes with golden lava in every bite.  A must try is the silky-smooth Mui Choy Century Egg Porridge, served with generous ingredients. Also order the Panfried Carrot Cake with XO sauce, where each bite is an explosion of flavours waiting to happen.

For dessert, MASA’s freshly baked egg tarts are a must. In between dishes, opt for a refreshing beverage like its Orange Yuzu, or blended Chinese teas to clear your palate.
