4 Tips to Keep Your Passport Safe When Travelling Overseas

8 January 2020

To leave not to leave your passport in the hotel room or apartment? If you’re unsure, these tips should help.

1. Make copies of it

Before embarking on your trip, ensure you have copies of your passport made in case of emergencies. Carry one or two with you, and leave a copy with your next of kin or next closest contact, so you’ll be able to get it via text or e-mail should the need arise.

2. Leave it in the hotel or apartment

If you’re afraid of getting pickpocketed, leaving your travel documents in the hotel safe or locked in your luggage in your apartment is probably your best bet. If your hotel doesn’t have individual safes in each room, ask your front desk if they have a safe where you can store the document.

3. Bring another form of identification on you

Your identity card or driver’s license may suffice if authorities or tourist locations ask to see original identification. In the event where you are asked to present original identification, ask if your passport is necessary and if another form of ID is allowed.

4. Hide it

Pickpockets tend to go for the obvious, so keep your passport in a travel money belt, waterproof cover (in case of water damage), anti-theft bag, or hidden pockets that are closely secured or fastened to your body. Money belts are to be used for things you don’t need access to. Keep the cash you need for the day in a wallet which you can easily access, and never ever flash the location of your money belt to the world!
