8 Real-Life Places That Look Like They Came Straight Out of Fairytales

8 January 2020

Most of the world is open for travel, and it's time you explore more places outside of the usual JB and Batam. Here we round up some of the places that look like they came straight out of a fairytale book.

Bojnice Castle, Slovakia
With its 12th century architecture, pastel spires, Gothic and Romantic touches, complete with a stalactite cave underground, the castle looks right at home in fairytales like Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast. The castle even holds a funeral carriage with gilded details that could very well serve as Cinderella’s ride to the ball.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
Built by Ludwig II of Bavaria to seek refuge and withdraw from public life in the 19th century, the stately royal residence served as the actual inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. With its imposing halls and ornate details, it’s not hard to see why.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves in New Zealand

Always wondered what it’s like to really stand beneath a sky full of stars? Now you can do so within close range. Well, kinda. The “stars” are actually glow worms that populate the area, which resembles a never-ending galaxy of lights.

Colmar, France
The colourful town has often been compared to Venice for its multi-hued buildings, but really, it looks like it is part of the provincial town in Beauty and the Beast.

Wisteria Tunnel, Japan
The tunnel of stunning pastel flowers at the Kawachi Fuji Garden in Kitakyushu, Japan, is reminiscent of a scene in a Disney movie, particularly Tangled.

Ta Prohm, Cambodia
Part of the Angkor temples, the temple, built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries with its lofty structures entwined with overgrown trees bring to mind the baobab trees from the story of The Little Princes. Ta Prohm is also famous for its appearance in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Hollywood star Angelina Jolie.

Big Sur, USA
Known as the venue for former Facebook president Sean Parker’s nuptials to Alexandra Lenas, the forests’ towering Redwood Trees served as the perfect backdrop to the Enchanted Forest-themed celebrations.

The Dark Hedges, United Kingdom
When fairytales are dark and full of terrors, they usually look somewhat like this. Rumour has it that this path, which also starred in HBO’s popular TV series Game of Thrones, is haunted in real life.
