How to Wear a Maxi Dress If You’re a Petite Girl

7 January 2020

The floor-grazing classic is no longer off-limits if you know how to style it properly.

1. It’s all about the fit
The right fit is everything. And I’m referring to the length of your dream dress. Looking fabulous (and proportionate) in a maxi dress means choosing a design that just sweeps the top of your toe whether you’re in heels or not. What you certainly don’t want: A dress that’s too long so you don’t look like you’re sweeping the floor all the time. If you’ve spotted a design you love that’s too long, a visit to the tailor will solve the issue quickly and without much cost.

2. Solid colours and consistent patterns

A single colour or single pattern gives you the illusion of height, as it runs in one continuous pattern from head to toe.

3. Pick the right silhouette
The wider your bottom is (like a ball gown or an A-line dress), the shorter you’ll look. And looking like a cupcake isn’t sweet at all.

4. The right neckline matters, too

A universally flattering sweetheart neckline is always a good choice. Otherwise, a halter neck works too. What you don’t want: a high-neck or long-sleeved dress that cuts you off or drowns your frame.

5. Seek help from accessories and outwear

A cropped jacket helps break your body into proportionate sections, and makes you look as if you’ve got longer legs. And, if the hem of your dress is just slightly past your feet, pull the top up a little with a carefully-cinched belt.
