Activities to Hit Your 2025 Body Goals!

22 January 2025 by Grace Kho

It’s already coming to the end of January, and if 'weight loss' or 'exercise more' is on your list of New Year’s resolutions but you haven’t gotten started yet, it’s not too late! In fact, now is the perfect time to begin, especially after all the festive dining. Exercise not only keeps us physically healthy, but it also boosts our mental well-being. As exercise increases endorphins, you may find yourself feeling happier and stronger—it’s like an antidote to stress! So this year, let’s stop making excuses and start moving!

There are many types of exercises you can do, either at parks, swimming complex or in the gym. However, some people may find the gym intimidating or confusing, which could lead to injuries if you're unsure how to use the machines and equipment properly. While pools and gyms are often a more affordable option, they require a lot of self-motivation and planning to work out on your own. That’s why we’re introducing different types of exercise classes for you to try—most of which require zero planning on your part. Just show up and get your exercise in!

High-Intensity Interval Trainings

High-Intensity Interval Training, commonly known as HIIT workout, consists of short bursts of intense cardiovascular exercises followed by quick recovery periods. This workout is perfect for people who enjoy variety and don’t want to stick to just one type of movement. As your heart rate increases, your body uses more oxygen and works harder, which boosts your metabolism. HIIT can also help you burn more calories than traditional workouts, especially if weight loss is your goal. After a few sessions, you’ll notice yourself becoming more toned, stronger, and faster.

Some HIIT classes you can find in Singapore include F45, BFT, and REVL. These brands focus on team training with professional coaches to ensure your form is correct and to help prevent injuries. Additionally, there are many outlets around Singapore, so you can easily find one near your home or office for the convenience of exercising

Personal Training

If you're truly serious about changing the way your body looks this year, we highly recommend considering Personal Training. While it may not be the most financially savvy option, we only recommend it if you have the means. Many personal trainers in Singapore are qualified in various areas, meaning they don’t just act as fitness coaches—they also serve as nutritionists or dietitians. As you may know, diet accounts for 80% of the work when it comes to gaining or losing weight. With a professional trainer, they can guide you on what to eat and help calculate your calories and macros.

There are many great personal trainers in Singapore, but we highly recommend gyms like One Personal Training Singapore, known for helping many celebrities get in shape, or MSFIT Personal Training Singapore, which caters exclusively to women and of course, Athletic Chamber that is on merewards! However, most common gyms like Anytime Fitness, Fitness First, and Virgin Active also offer personal training for an additional cost. So, if you already have a membership there, it might be time to consider hiring a personal trainer if you're not seeing results on your own.

CrossFit

Made popular by Physical:100 Season 2 winner Amotti, CrossFit is a branded exercise regimen similar to HIIT, but with more variation, including Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, plyometrics, and more. It typically involves more equipment and assistance compared to a HIIT workout. If you're a beginner or haven't exercised in a while, we don’t recommend trying CrossFit just yet, as the exercises can be intense, and you may not enjoy it, which could lead to giving up on exercise altogether. However, if you’re looking for a challenge this year and want to push your body further, we highly recommend giving CrossFit a try!

Some gyms that offer CrossFit include CrossFit Unit, Mobilus Singapore, WAO Fitness, and many more. Find a gym near you that offers this programme and start clocking in your workouts!

Calisthenics

The great thing about calisthenics is that you can do it literally anywhere, and people of all ages can practice it too! Whether you've mastered core exercises and can complete the human flagpole, or you simply want to achieve one pull-up for your next IPPT, calisthenics is a great option. In short, calisthenics is a form of strength training that uses your body weight as resistance to build strength and flexibility.

Some popular moves include pull-ups, dips, squats, and more. These exercises are essential for building muscle, especially for women, who have lower bone density and are more prone to osteoporosis. To combat this, performing basic calisthenics movements can help build muscle, which in turn supports bone health and helps prevent bone loss as they age.

If you wish to attend a calisthenics class, try Singapore Calisthenics Academy, where coaches will guide you in achieving your goals! If not, start small at your nearest park or workout corner with pull-up bars or horizontal bars for dips. Remember, progression takes time. If you're unable to do a pull-up, consider simply hanging on the bar for 30 seconds—this helps improve your back and posture as well! It's always a win as long as you start somewhere!

Spin / Indoor Cycling

We know what you're thinking—no, Spin is not just cycling on a stationary bike. It’s an indoor group cycling class led by an instructor, often accompanied by loud music. Designed to train endurance, speed, and strength, it typically includes choreography that targets different muscle groups. A 45-minute spin class will likely leave you sweating more than a 45-minute leisurely bike ride outdoors! Plus, if you love music or used to enjoy clubbing, Spin offers themed classes where you can ride to the tunes you love. What’s better than grooving to your favourite beats while burning those calories away?

If you're new to spin, check out beginner trial packages from smaller studios like Vibe Studio and CRNK! If convenience is a priority, try studios like Revolution Singapore or Absolute Cycle, which have multiple outlets around Singapore. You can also consider using ClassPass to explore different studios and the various themes they offer!

Pilates

Don’t underestimate the power of simple Pilates movements! Reformer Pilates has gained popularity over the years for its versatility and dynamic machine, which helps facilitate precise movement, muscle engagement, and improved posture. It has become a favourite activity for many working adults looking to tone their bodies and get some exercise. If you’re new to strength training, we recommend attending their beginner classes, as they will teach you essential breathing techniques while guiding you through the exercises.

Try them out today! There are many Pilates studios in Singapore, but we recommend The Flow Studios, Ascend Pilates, or Absolute Pilates (especially if you're looking for a convenient location).

Exercising is a form of self-care where we take care of our bodies, especially as we get older. Once you start working out, you'll find yourself feeling more energised, healthier, and stronger. However, if you're looking to change the shape of your body, remember that exercise plays only a small part. The majority comes from being disciplined with your diet, such as maintaining a calorie deficit if you're trying to lose weight. We hope you all continue to stay healthy and have a happy 2025!
