Every year, the nation celebrates our beloved country, Singapore by gathering in red and white. The time where we get to watch the flag fly past during Saturdays’ NDP rehearsals, watch our brave Red Lions parachute down from the planes and sing our hearts out to some of our favourite songs like Home, Count on Me or The Road Ahead. Items to Bring for NDP and Firework Shows
To combat the heat and ensure that you stay as comfortable as possible while celebrating the nation’s birthday, it is almost essential to bring these items along with you for NDP. You’d have seen how others prepared themselves by going early and securing a spot so to get the best view of the performance.
Here are some items you should bring for the firework shows or the parade:
1. Portable Fan
Enough said. An absolute necessity if you’re going to be under the heat for hours, even if its at night, Singapore is just too hot to not own a handheld fan.
With the rise in popularity among Singaporeans, a local brand, JISULIFE® has taken the internet by storm with their ride range of electric fans. Some are so strong and unique, it can even help to dry wet hair – think a portable hair dryer!

2. Camping Chair and Picnic Mat
If you’re going to be there early to secure the best spot, you’ve got to do it right. Opening a picnic mat gives you more space, especially when the crowd comes. This allows you to enjoy a bite or at least have space to sit and rest while waiting for the show to start.
We highly recommend getting a camping chair as well or as an alternative to picnic mats. Chairs are generally just better on the knees and help reduce pins and needles for sitting cross-legged too long on the ground. Great to have both if you’re going to be there for long hours.

3. Thermal Bottle (with Ice Water)
With such hot weather, hydrating is a must. If you’re catching the National Day Parade in person, it is important to bring an extra bottle of water as the goodie bag only has 1 bottle of water, which may not suffice if you’re going to be under the sun and singing your heart out all night to all the NDP songs.
Thermal Bottle with iced water is just the cherry on top when you’re trying to cool down. You can even wet some napkins and tap them on your skin to cool your overall body temperature.

4. Cooling Wipes

Alternatively, we highly recommend bringing a pack of cooling wipes. Brands like Biore make amazing cooling wipes that could lower your surface body temperature down by at least 3 degrees while removing all the grime of sweat and stickiness on your body. We recommend using one while waiting for the parade to start and one before you leave to take public transport as this wipe also helps to eliminate sweat odour, keeping you feeling fresh and clean.

5. Sunglasses
This is important for anyone who is catching the parade live or getting a spot near Marina Bay Floating platform. As the performance there is exciting with most showcases up in the sky, like paratroopers and fighter jets, it is important to protect our eyes from the sun as we look up at all the amazing defenses Singapore has! Moreoever, if you’re going earlier at 4pm, the sun is often bright and scorching, wearing a pair of sunglasses not only protects your eyes but it prevent you from squinting your eyes.

6. Picnic Snacks
The entire parade is about 4-5 hours and if you do not have a ticket into the Padang, it means that you’ll not be able to receive the goodie bags. The bag often consists of snacks like potato chips, bread, cookies and more. However, if you are watching the parade from the Merlion or Helix Bridge, you may not be entitled to a goodie bag, hence food is entirely your responsibility.
Even if you’re planning to have dinner after the parade, do also take into consideration that everyone will be looking for a place to eat and restaurants would most likely be packed, resulting in delays in getting seats and food.
Hence, it is better if you prepare a little picnic snack or go on a full-blown picnic to ensure that you can enjoy the performance without a hungry stomach.
Singapore is indeed our dear homeland and one that brings people of all ethnicities together. For more information about the parade, you may find them on the NDP official website.
