Here’s how to disinfect and keep your phone clean

22 July 2020

It’s paramount that you practice good self-hygiene to stay germ-free. With our perpetual dependence on our smartphones, do you know that these devices are a hotbed for germs? Research has shown that we use our smartphones at least once every 10 minutes. Thus, it’s important to start cleaning your phone.

1. Use disinfecting wipes

Using an alcohol wipe, gently wipe the exterior of your phone. You don’t have to go through all the nook and cranny, especially the ports, as it might seep in causing your phone to spoil – just the exterior would suffice. It’s strongly advisable to not use bleach as there are harsh chemicals that may damage your screen. If you're working from home and constantly on the phone, use these tips to stay productive.

2. Wash your hands thoroughly

This goes without saying – practice good self-hygiene by washing your hands thoroughly with soap. Wet your hands to the wrist, lather up some soap by rubbing your hands together and scrub for at least 20 seconds (no less!). Rinse with running water and dry using a clean paper towel. Always remember to wash your hands especially before or after preparing food, using the toilet, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.

3. Leave your phone out from the toilet

Are you guilty of bringing your phone to the toilet just because you need to reply to a message or an urgent email? If yes, now’s the time to stop. Research shows there are harmful germs found lurking in toilets, which makes it very easy for them to latch onto your phones. For your own benefit, leave your phone out of them.

4. Strap your phone during gym workouts

Avoid placing your phone on the treadmill or any other gym equipment. Instead, place it in an armband or in your pocket. Research shows that free weights in a gym have 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, and a treadmill has 74 times more bacteria than a water faucet – that’s the hard truth.

5. Use a UV phone sanitiser

While this isn’t the cheapest solution, it’s one of the most effective. This method uses UV-C light to kill germs and bacteria that are lurking on your phone. This product, such as PhoneSoap, is a small rectangular box device that safely sanitises and can provide you with peace of mind.
