How to Sanitise and Disinfect Your Phone without Damaging It

3 March 2021

Practising good self-hygiene is imperative, especially when we are still experiencing a pandemic. With our perpetual dependence on our mobile phones every day, do you know that these devices are a hotbed for germs to breed? Research has shown that we use our mobile phones at least once every 10 minutes! It’s high time we keep our smartphones clean and sanitised for peace of mind with these six handy tips.

1. Leave Your Phone Out from the Toilet

Are you guilty of bringing your phone to the toilet just because you need to reply a message or too attached? If yes, you should stop because research shows there are harmful germs found lurking in toilets, making it very easy for them to latch onto your phones. For your benefit, leave your phone out of them.

2. Keep Your Phone as a Personal Item
Like a comb or a toothbrush, regard your mobile phone as a personal item. Avoid handing it to someone, because while we practice good hygiene, we aren’t sure about others. Whenever possible, politely decline to lend your phone unless completely necessary.

3. Use Disinfecting Wipes
Gently wipe the exterior of your phone at least twice a day. No need to go through the nook and crannies, especially the ports as liquid might seep in causing your phone to spoil. Only use alcohol wipes and do not add any other substances such as bleach as these contain harsh chemicals which can damage your screen.

4. Strap Up Your Phone During a Run or Gym Workouts

Avoid placing your phone on the treadmill or any other gym equipment when exercising. Instead, place it in an armband or pocket. Research shows that free weights in a gym have 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat, and a treadmill has 74 times more bacteria than a water faucet – that’s the hard truth!

5. Regularly Wash Your Hands

This is a no-brainer! Always remember to practice self-hygiene by washing your hands thoroughly with soap. Wet your hands to the wrist, lather up some soap by rubbing your hands together and scrub for at least 20 seconds (no less!). Rinse with running water and dry using a clean paper towel. Always remember to wash your hands especially before or after preparing food, using the toilet, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
